Chapter 20

With Troy gone for the week until sometime on Saturday and with minimal contact from him, thoughts of the day he’d left faded into the background. I decided I wouldn’t worry about his lack of faith or my apparent growing feelings for his best friend, and instead, I decided to worry about the Keds photoshoot coming up on Saturday morning.

I’d talked to both Laken and Elizabeth about the ordeal, and they both assured me they were doing everything to make sure I would look perfect. Add that on top of Keds’ own people, and I was pretty sure we had all our bases covered. I was simply told to show up at a photography studio at ten in the morning and that we’d be doing a few on-location shoots afterwards. This season, they were working on a campaign called “Not Your Average Girl” where they showcased regular women doing extraordinary things. And, well, I was going to be their posterchild. Why?

Good question.

So, with Elizabeth in tow since she had helped set up the shoot, I showed up at ten at a high-profile photography studio where I was immediately introduced to the top photographer of many of the popular magazines: Jean Le Beau, a Frenchman with an eye for fashion and enough attitude to put a hormonal teenage girl to shame.

He studied me a moment, even circling me once before he seemed to suddenly know exactly what he wanted, and he began barking out orders to his ladies in waiting.

“I want feminine yet casual. I want girl-next-door with a secret. Do it. Go.”

So they did. They curled my hair in soft curls and did my makeup very naturally but still bolder than I was used to. My personal stylist, who had been hired by Elizabeth, then helped me dress in a cute top and a pair of stylish cropped pants before she added a pair of Keds to finish the look. They put me in front of a white backdrop and set me loose.

“It’s summer, you’re in love. Give me a happy, young woman,” Jean told me as he readied the camera.

I stood there awkwardly. “Um, I’ve never done this before. Are there some techniques I should be aware of?” I questioned.

“No techniques. Just relax and have fun,” he replied sternly.

I remained where I was while I put on a fake smile.

Jean dropped the camera. “No, no, no. I need fluidity. Movement.”

“Just have some fun with it, Gabby,” Elizabeth told me.

“Oui,” Jean nodded before he started to display some happy poses. “Kick your leg back, show off those shoes, and smile,” he said as he did it, and I giggled. He was immediately back to business as he aimed his camera back at me. “There. Go.”

I attempted to relax, and I did what he’d instructed. It was still a little stiff, but the longer I was in front of the camera, the easier it became. Especially when Jean started to cheer behind his camera.

But just as I was starting to get comfortable, Jean instructed the ladies to change my outfit.
